Individualized Social Skills Programs

Helping Young Adults Master the Social Skills That Matter Most

The individualized social skills program is for young adults who desire a more differentiated approach which could involve a slower pace or more intensive instruction and more frequent opportunities to practice and reinforce skills. Based on the results of a very thorough social skills assessment and through a collaborative process involving the individual and their family, we thoughtfully formulate the goals. Priority is given to those goals that hold significant social importance and that have a meaningful and lasting impact on the individual’s everyday life and overall well-being. Our approach emphasizes explicit instruction, structured practice, and the application of skills in real-world environments. We also offer caregiver training to provide families with tools and strategies to reinforce learning, assist with assignments, and support generalization across daily life.

The individualized curriculum begins with a comprehensive social skills assessment and a thorough interview with caregivers to identify:

  • Specific social skill deficits.

  • Existing strengths.

  • Learning style

  • Reinforcers that are motivating for the individual.

  • Potential barriers to learning (e.g., anxiety, sensory sensitivities).

  • Target environments and relevant social partners.

Goals are selected based on the individual’s strengths and deficits. They may include: emotion recognition, perspective-taking, conversation skills, problem-solving.
